 Prose descriptionTateTate is a family of galleries and operates on four sites in different parts of Britain. The galleries house the national collection of British art from the sixteenth century for the present day, including the Turner Bequest, and the national collection of international modern art. Hints & Tips 2 The original Tate Gallery opened in 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art. It was built on the site of Millbank Prison, demolished in 1892, and was designed to house the collection of nineteenth century painting and sculpture given to the nation by Sir Henry Tate, together with some British paintings transferred from the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square. Its responsibilities were specifically for modern British art, then defined as artists born after 1790. In 1917, following a bequest of modern paintings from the collection of Sir Hugh Lane, the gallery was formally constituted as the National Gallery of Modern Foreign Art. At the same time its responsibilities for British art were extended to artists born before 1790. A separate Board of Trustees was set up for the Tate Gallery which, until that time, had been entirely controlled by the Trustees of the National Gallery. The National Gallery and Tate gallery Act (1954) came into force in 1955, effecting the legal separation of the two galleries and establishing the Tate as an independent institution. Each of the four sites also run exhibitions using both Tate's own holdings and loans from private and public collections around the world. One such exhibition is Constable to Delacroix: British art and the French Romantics, running from 5 February - 11 May 2003. Tate is also developing a number of online resources. Tate Collection is an online database of digital images of 50,000 works from the Tate's holdings. Turner: Reflections of Sea and Light is an online resource which includes digital images of Turner's work. Matisse and Picasso I-Map is an online resource being developed for visually impaired people.  |
