This page is based upon text submitted to the Interoperability Focus Advisory Committee, and represents a number of the main activities in the month of June. The list is not exhaustive, and comments and queries are welcomed.
Events attended
- At the beginning of the month, I attended a planning meeting for the CIMI Institute in New York. This meeting brought together those likely to be involved in teaching CIMI material (the use of Dublin Core in Museums, etc.) with a consultant who advised on teaching techniques. The curriculum is being developed at the moment, and two test workshops later this year will be closely evaluated and dissected in order to refine the material for 'proper' use in late '99 - 2000.
- The CIMI Institute meeting was followed by a meeting of CIMI's Dublin
Core Test bed group, who agreed a final set of changes to the guide to
implementing Dublin Core in museums (previous draft available from the CIMI web site, and soon to be updated). The group also discussed the use of Dublin Core in RDF, and began to explore a set of 'core' qualifiers for cultural heritage metadata.
Work in Progress
- Work continues on the 'Information Landscapes' document.
- As part of the development work for the UK's Distributed National
Electronic Resource (DNER), time has been spent looking at ways in which
existing Data Centres in the UK could be made more accessible to users
searching across their holdings. As part of this, I'm exploring ways in
which the current work on an International Interoperability Profile could
be accelerated.
Memberships
new committees this month include;
- as part of the restructuring of the Dublin Core process, a new Executive Committee has been created, which I have been invited to join. The membership comprises Stu Weibel and Eric Miller of the DC Directorate at OCLC, myself, Ren Iannella of DSTC in Australia, and Thomas Baker of the German National Research Centre for I.T.
