This page is based upon text submitted to the Interoperability Focus Advisory Committee, and represents a number of the main activities in the month of November. The list is not exhaustive, and comments and queries are welcomed.
Events attended
- At the start of November, I attended MODELS 10, on the subject of rights management. I'm meant to be writing up a short report on this event, and the actions arising from it, which should appear on this web page shortly.
- Also this month, I attended the first meeting of the Web of Science
Enhancement Committee, and the formal launch of Web of Science at a reception afterwards. Web of Science is a major
new acquisition by JISC, which allows the UK Academic Community access to a range of citation databases across numerous subjects (not just science, so daft name...).
- I also attended an EARL seminar on Building the UK Electronic Library, a short-term study they've been conducting over the past few months. I can't find any links from their site to the report from this study, or to the presentations on the day, but they'll doubtless be announced soon. It was good to see some obvious synergies with work in HE and elsewhere, with Andy Powell (from UKOLN) talking about the architecture being developed for HE's Resource Discovery Network in a way which fitted nicely with the other public library presentations.
- I spent two days at the eLib Hybrid Libraries Conference organised by the HyLife Hybrid
Library project. Brian Kelly (Web Focus at UKOLN) and I gave presentations in a session along with Ian Upton from the BUILDER project at Birmingham University. As usual, my presentation is available from http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/interop-focus/presentations/.
- Continuing the development and evangelisation of the Bath Profile, I
organised an event with Joy Fraser (UKOLN's Events Manager), allowing some discussion of the Profile from a UK perspective. A report from this meeting will be available shortly.
- Also this month, I attended this group's third Advisory Committee meeting, the formal launch of the RDN, and an mda Board
meeting at the Imperial War Museum.
Publications this month
- The paper for D-Lib Magazine mentioned last month was written and submitted. It will appear in the December issue of D-Lib which is due out in the next few days.
Work in Progress
- With huge input from Joy Fraser once more, I've spent quite a lot of time finalising things for the previously mentioned Terminology Workshop, which is being jointly run by UKOLN and mda. This workshop, now part of the MODELS programme, will be held early in the New Year, and will tackle issues related to using and creating controlled terminologies.
- Time has been spent on the Bath Profile, looking over comments and feedback, and working with the other editors towards having a draft for submission to the ZIG meeting in January. We are also looking at ways in which the Profile can be widely publicised and tested.
- The Dublin Core group is working hard to clarify parts of the Model, and to agree a core set of qualifiers before the end of the year. This is absorbing quite a lot of everyone's time right now.
