This page is based upon text submitted to the Interoperability Focus Advisory Committee, and represents a number of the main activities in the month of May. The list is not exhaustive, and comments and queries are welcomed.
Events attended
- at the start of May, I was invited to speak on metadata at the Electronic
Public Information conference in Birmingham. This conference is aimed at
IT-aware middle-management types in the public sector, and about 300 people
attended. Sarah Ormes from UKOLN also spoke.
- the next day, I attended a briefing on New Opportunities Fund activity at
the British Library.
- also in May, I flew to Washington for my first meeting of the CIMI
Executive Committee. Whilst there, I met with Dan Greenstein at the Digital
Library Federation to discuss possible collaborative projects.
- staying in Hull for a change, I attended a meeting of the UK Digital
Cities Forum. Very slick, with robots and smoke and stuff, but I'm still not
entirely sure what it was about...
In Progress
- Alicia Wise, the JISC Collections Manager, and I are working on a paper to
explain what vendors need to do in order to plug into the DNER. We've
circulated this for comment to a number of groups. If anyone on this
Committee would like to comment on a draft at this stage, please let me
know...
- I need to do some more on the workshops for later this year, as discussed
at the last Advisory Committee meeting. Minutes from that meeting are also
due.
- At very short notice, I co-ordinated a bid in response to HEFCE's
e-University call for expressions of interest. A team, led by UKOLN and
including Bath's Division of Access and Continuing Studies (DACS) and Hull's
Academic Services: Learning Development has now been awarded a contract to
examine the value of electronic learning resources to the emerging
e-University. We've got until July, so timescales are pretty tight.
- I'm still writing an article on Interoperability for Ariadne. It's due by
the end of May, and will be published in June.
- I have contributed to a document UKOLN is preparing for the New
Opportunities Fund. This document has been co-ordinated by Sarah Ormes and
Andy Powell at UKOLN, and is intended to offer guidance to NOF projects as
the prepare their more detailed plans for funding.
- I have been asked to undertake a technical review of the HE Archive Hub in
the next couple of weeks.
- I have been asked to write papers for Program, Learned Publishing, and
Online Information Review.
Completed
- The educational metadata meeting is now organised, and takes place early
in June.
- An article on Identifiers/DOI has been written for Ariadne, and will be
published in June.
