Events attended
- Pete travelled to New York City for the CIMI Members meeting, which was
preceded by a CIMI Institute Forum event on current activity in the Dublin
Core Metadata Initiative. The Members meeting presented updates on the
activities of the various CIMI projects and working groups, including work
on event-based metadata and OAI-based metadata harvesting. There was a
lengthy discussion of the XML DTD which has been developed to represent
information units within the SPECTRUM procedural standard and which is now
entering the "testbed" phase.
- Paul attended a BECTa-facilitated meeting in Kenilworth, exploring the
meaning and functionality of 'Learning Objects'. The meeting agreed on the
need for further work in this area.
- Paul travelled to Stockholm to attend an expert round-table for the
EC-funded DigiCult project. The project as a whole is looking at
digitisation strategies for cultural heritage content across Europe, and
this meeting concentrated upon technological issues.
- Paul travelled to London to attend a meeting at the Historic Manuscripts
Commission, looking at the feasibility and value of joining up some of the
work being done by archival networks such as A2A, the Archives Hub, and
others. As I had to leave early (to speak at a DNER workshop), I missed the
end of the meeting, but attendees seemed to be agreed on the value of a more
integrated approach.
- Paul travelled to Glasgow to attend a workshop laid on by the HILT
project. This workshop was examining a number of the recommendations made by
HILT for solving the problem posed by the large number of thesauri,
controlled terminologies, etc. in use across libraries, museums, archives,
etc. The workshop attendees appeared to lean towards recommending the
funding of some pilot work to explore mapping between at least some of these
existing terminologies.
- Paul travelled to Brussels to attend a meeting on the use of metadata in
e-Government services. The meeting appeared to conclude that there was scope
for international effort in this area, possibly building upon the 'metadata
framework' model implemented here in the UK.
