Pete Johnston gave two presentations to Making Sense of Metadata, a Training Day organised by the Society of Archivists EAD/Data Exchange Special Interest Group and held at the Meeting Place, Euston, London on Thursday 17 November 2005.
The presentation introduces the concept of metadata through a practical example (the descriptive information used to find, manage and use MP3 files). It emphasises that we create metadata in order to do things, or for software to do things on our behalf. It presents a brief overview of some metadata specifications and standards, and points to some of the current issues in the area..
The presentation introduces the Dublin Core metadata standard, from its origins as a simple metadata schema for cross-domain resource discovery, through to more recent developments including the publication of the DCMI Abstract Model and the emergence of the notion of the "DC application profile" as a specification of how Dublin Core is implemented in a particular context. It includes a very brief examination of some services based on the use of Dublin Core metadata.
