This page describes some of the activities that were undertaken by staff at UKOLN as part of the HILT project
IntroductionHILT - High-Level Thesaurus Phase I was a one year project (2000-2001) jointly funded by the RSLP and JISC. The purpose of the project was to study and report on the problem of cross-searching and browsing by subject across a range of communities, services, and service or resource types. Phase II (2002-2003) aims to move the findings of Phase I into a 'Pilot Project' stage. The project encompasses partners and stakeholders from a wide range of communities including archives, museums and libraries, amongst others. HILT Phase II is funded by the JISC. Project Partners:

Work on HILT at UKOLN:UKOLN provided a review of literature and projects in order to help determine best practice for the provision of interfaces to thesauri and subject vocabularies. The report is entitled "Automated and manual approaches to the provision of thesauri and subject vocabularies" and can be found at: http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/metadata/hilt/interfaces/. Rosemary Russell gave a presentation on the same topic at the HILT Workshop, held at the University of Strathclyde on the 19 June 2001. within the JISC Information Environment as one or more machine to machine
services. The report recommends future directions for the delivery of
HILT terminology services in an automated fashion. This report is
