ROADS Codes used for Subject-Descriptor-Schemes

In the course of compiling the ROADS Cataloguing Guidelines and undertaking the RECCI evaluation of ROADS cataloguing practice, it appeared useful for the ROADS Template Registry to include a list of codes which could be used for the "Subject-Descriptor-Scheme" element in ROADS templates.
The following list is adapted from Appendix G (Subject Systems Codes) in the UNIMARC Manual: Bibliographic Format, 2nd. ed., (IFLA UBCIM Publications, n.s., 14. Munich: Saur, 1996). Some of the codes have been changed (e.g. "LC" has become "LCSH") and major classification schemes added (e.g. DDC, UDC and LCC). The purpose of the list is to provide a reference to major schemes which may (possibly) be used within ROADS templates. If ROADS users want to include schemes not included here, this is not a problem. Users should create a relevant "Subject-Descriptor-Scheme" entry (either full-text or a code). Then they have the option of e-mailing the ROADS Template Registry so that details can be recorded on this page.
