PRESENTING DIGITISED MATERIALS FOR LEARNING: BREAK-OUT SESSIONS
Having considered how digitised materials can support learning through the
different ways of creating multimedia and of encouraging learning (see Guidelines
and Notes),
participants were divided into groups to consider the following issues:
- How will you turn your resources into an effective learning tool?
- How do you make your resource different from the rest?
- What are your concerns about creating materials supporting learning?
Whilst learning more about other participants projects, the groups raised the
following points or issues:
BIRMINGHAM
LEARNING GROUP 1
Overview
- Varieties of Access
- Dynamics
- Learning without realising
- Links to relevant sites
- Site design (look and feel)
- Presenting collections?
LEARNING GROUP 2
Overview
- what is practical within time
- not being too general
- plan for learning early on in project
- consult with people who understand on-line resources
- what are we providing that they couldnt get from a book
- finding a balance
- concentration span?
- What does the user want?
NEWPORT
LEARNING GROUP 1
Overview
- Corporate standards vs. NOF requirements
- Organisation support
- Interoperability
- Lack of Technical Expertise
- Technical Language Barrier
- X-Organisation working
- Ascetic value
- Future proofing
LONDON 2/10
Key points
- Capture interest
- package information within interactivity
- user feedback/input
Exploit Uniqueness of Historical Archive (ie. from local area)
Accuracy of information and emphasis
LEARNING GROUP 1
- Identifying target audiences
- Expectations of the resource- awareness of user involvement
- Uniqueness of material
- Quality management
- Sufficient user feedback
--------------------------------------------------------
- Information and access- search/browse
- learning tool- more idea of journey
- breaking information into groups/themes/tours etc
- selection-evaluation
- cater for different levels
- impossible to cover every level
--------------------------------------------------------
- Navigation between learning resources- take people onward
- Need for contextualisation
- Think of related issues
- What question is service answering?
- Need to know something about learning process
- User needs/Audience
- Resist: over-packaging/inflexibility
- Choices of format
- learning route via interface
Limitations on depth of learning approach for some types of information (eg. Legal
info.)
Heritage
LEARNING GROUP 2
- Key aim of projects is to give access to large mass of material eg. Maps- could tie in
with other projects
- Narrative/film storyboard could give extra layer of information
- Work with user groups/target
- Printed resources
- Good, layered information- means people will return
- Concerns
- how to bring subject alive- involve people! eg. Buildings
- how to present new content in best way- use guidelines and user groups
LEARNING GROUP 3
- How do you select materials?
- Make it fun/interactive
- Few layers; not buried
- Navigation
- Different users- adults/kids/teachers
- Different approaches
--------------------------------------------------------
- Testing on users (testing on non-involved partners)
- Parent + child- parent learns through helping child
--------------------------------------------------------
- Turning paper resources into interactive (basic skills: providing support online)
- Partnerships
- Technical concerns (internal/external support)- 101 things going on
- Types of material: maps/ image/ text records
- GIS..Gazetteer (Historical)
- Outsourcing Scanning
- Standards- Stick to what everyone else is using
YORK
LEARNING GROUP 1
Learning techniques:
- used to informal learning, but not formal
- learning in terms of professional development
- themed learning packages
- BUT can be hard to know how to take more targeted learning approach
Concerns:
- technology dominates content
- time, diverse audiences (no time to consult!)
- creating interpretative text
- setting yourself up as an authority
- shelf-life of a theme- keeping it fresh
Why be different?
- competition
- neutrality
- access to originals
- NOT tourism based
LEARNING GROUP 2
Effective Learning Tools:
- multiple access
- different and appropriate media
- find user and level of approach
Making resources different:
- linking past and present
- regular updating
Concerns:
- self limits!!
- Ongoing time needs!!
- Living with under-estimation
