UK
- Centre For The Public Library In The
Information Society - This is a new initiative by the Department of Information
Studies at the University of Sheffield. The centre will coordinate and initiate research
which is specifically con
- cerned with public libraries. A number of projects are already in place and are covering
issues such as social audits of
library services, the impact
of reduced opening hours and Interpersonal
skills for library staff.
- CLIP - This project ran at Croydon Public Library and explored
how the Internet could be integrated into current public library services.
- Croydon Online Research
Project - This is a follow-up to the CLIP project and explores the impact of Croydon Online on the local community.
- Earl - Earl aims to help public libraries become
networked and offers a number of services ranging from advice on how to connect to the
Internet, to helping identify useful Internet resources, to hosting individual public
libraries' WWW pages.
- ITPoint - this is a prototype for an IT based
library and information service - allowing the local community access to the Internet,
CD-Rom's, wordprocessors etc.
- Cambridge City Online - this
project aims to get all local information up onto the web - it is not a tourist resource
but offers the type of practical and useful information that is needed daily by the city's
inhabitants.
- Surrey Web - this is an integrated public
information access network which offers information on a wide range of topics including
leisure, business and public services (including libraries) in Surrey.
- Library Online Information
Service (LOIS) - LOIS began life as the Golden Valley Information Project which looked
at how electronic information services could be provided in the rural areas of Hereford
and Worcester. The project has now expanded to cover the whole county and is known as
LOIS.
European
- PUBLICA - the European Union's new
concerted action for public libraries.
- CHILIAS - this will
be exploring how a virtual children's library can be set up.
- MOBILE - an EU
funded project which looks at the information needs of remote communities and whether they
can be met by mobile libraries using latest networking technology.
- PLAIL - an
exploration of the needs of adult independent learners in public libraries and the
possibility of new technological developments helping to satisfy these needs. EU funded
and involving Clwyd library service.
- REACTIVE TELECOM - another EU project
looking at library services using new information products - in particular speech
recognition devices and cable tv. Gateshead library service is involved in this project.
- SPRINTEL
- an EU funded project looking at developing a prototype audio-text information service in
a library environment.
- Public Libraries and the
Information Society - an EU project looking at the challenges for public libraries in
Europe in establishing their role in the information society.
North American
- InFoPeople - this project
is being run in Californian public libraries and aims to encourage public access to the
Internet. A report on Berkeley
Public Library's experiences of the project in 1995 is available.
- Internet Public Library - an attempt to create a
library for and about the Internet community - based on a public library model.
- SAILOR - Maryland's Online Public Information
Server which was created with the help of the local library service.
- Libraries Online - Microsoft's project
exploring the best way to offer public access to the new networking technologies.
