America's National Information Infrastructure

• Connecting The Nation : Classrooms, Libraries and Health Care Organizations in the Electronic Age - prepared by the USA National telecommunications and Information Administration in June 1995. This provides a status report on what has been achieved so far in the NII initiative.
• KickStart is an initiative based around community-based efforts to bring the Information Superhighway to all individuals through schools, libraries, and community centres. There are a number of reports available here.

Surveys

• UK Public Libraries Networking Survey - this survey was undertaken in 1991 by UKOLN and shows the picture of public library working in the UK at that time.
• Library and Information Commission Public Library Internet Survey - this survey was undertaken in 1995 by UKOLN for the Library and Information Commission and shows the extent of Internet connections in UK public libraries.
• New Zealand Public Libraries and their use of the Internet - a 1996 survey by David Martin

Connection Costs and Practicalities

• Internet Costs and Costs Models for Public Libraries : Final Report - a 1995 report again produced by McClure which details the costs involved for public libraries in offering an Internet service - these figures relate only to North America.

• Community Networking Documents and Resources - a selection of resources concerning freenets and other community information initiatives.
• Characterization of Freenets in the USA and Canada : Facing History and Managing the Future - Timothy Chase discusses how Freenets must learn from public libraries experiences of providing community information.

• Electronic Publishing and Public Libraries - an exploration of how libraries may become publishers in the future networked world - produced in 1991 by Brewster Kahle.
• Department of Heritage's Statement on the Public Library Review - Virginia Bottomley's response to the most indepth review of public libraries in the UK ever undertaken - made on the 18th of December, 1995
