EduLib: Educational Development for Higher Education Library Staff
Project descriptionas of May 9th 1997 IntroductionThe Follett Report places great stress on the increasingly important role which libraries and other support staff must play in turning the use of networked information resources into an everyday part of teaching, learning and research. Libraries are identified as key agents in the provision of training in the use of these resources.EduLib complements many of the information other projects under this initiative. It will provide a national programme of educational development for library and information services staff. EduLib participants will possess both the networked information skills, and the teaching skills needed to work as training and support staff in the Electronic Library. EduLib will develop and support regionally based consortia throughout the UK. Those consortia will represent the diversity of the higher education community. A team of Development Officers will establish those consortia in conjunction with the Core Team.
DescriptionBuilding the consensus The EduLib Development Team will sample current opinion and practice concerning the teaching and learning role of library and support staff. They will use this to develop a national consensus regarding the nature of the information skills we are attempting to develop.Training the trainersOn the basis of the consensus, individual elements of the teaching skills training will be developed into the EduLib programme as training packages. The following elements are likely to be included:
Developing practiceThe EduLib programme will be launched on a national scale with the Development Team assisting in the dissemination of the materials and advising on their use.Embedding the EduLib approach within staff developmentThe EduLib model will be established via the network of practitioners seconded to work with development teams. The EduLib model will be embedded into staff development in institutions of higher education. The University of Hull will maintain and update the training materials for a period of three years (in the first instance) after completion of the project.ParticipantsEduLib is a collaboration between the University of Hull, the University of Abertay Dundee and SEDA (The Staff and Educational Development Association). The Development Teams will be the major participants in the project and will shape and guide the development of the programme to ensure relevance to librarians developing new roles in preparing for and promoting effective use of the electronic library. |
