Current online journals tend to mimic print versions, but this is simply an early phase in our use of the new online medium, in particular the World Wide Web. The implications are enormous and scholarly journals are set to be transformed. The talk will briefly look at some of the influences shaping this change, and then argue the case for a new publishing model that can exploit the capabilities of the online medium for journal users. One such model is called an 'Open Journal' in which online journals on the Web are being interlinked. The talk will explore how this framework can increase the ability of users to follow, search and read the literature.
