Abstract

This paper advocates the use of large lexical resources to generate synonyms of terms supplied by the user in keyword based matches. The use of one such resource -- WordNet [2,10] -- allows the system to identify the role of terms in a phrase (adjective/noun) and attempt to find further matches by either (i) generalizing appropriate terms, or (ii) generating a set of more specific terms that can be used instead. Such an approach can be extended easily to new terms, and also used in a highly distributed system.

Keywords: Ontologies, WordNet, information retrieval.
