The term 'electronic publishing' covers a variety of activities employing a range of media, at present comprising online services (including videotex), tape services, magnetic disc products, CD-ROM and other digital optical disc products, ROM cards and electronic journals. When considering library services and resources, videotex and ROM cards are of limited interest and need not be considered further. Because several of the electronic services exhibit common features and function by the digital processing of information, some important considerations are applicable to all, while others present individual peculiarities. The typology and features of the various forms of electronic publishing are reviewed in the next chapter.
