Before moving to the United States, William Arms held faculty positions in computing and operational research at the University of Sussex and the Open University. From 1978 to 1994 he was director of computing at Dartmouth College and vice president for computing at Carnegie Mellon University where he led a series of electronic library projects. In his present position, he directs the library systems programme of the Corporation for National Research Initiatives
