Traugott Koch is Research Officer at UKOLN, University of Bath, UK where he started working in May 2005. He is primarily working on the JISC funded projects "eBank UK", an e-Science and repository project in the Semantic Grid Programme, and "Information Environment Service Registry (IESR)" in the Shared Services Programme. In addition, he participates in a State-of-the-Art Study on Terminology Services and Technology, commissioned by JISC.
After Social Science studies in Germany and Sweden he worked at most departments of scientific libraries of different size. From 1992 until 2005 he was working with developing electronic library services as a Senior Librarian and Digital Library Scientist at Lund University Library in Sweden, Development department NetLab, which he co-founded 1992.
In parallel, Traugott is a member of the Knowledge Discovery and Digital Library Research Group (KnowLib) at the Department of Information Technology at Lund University.
During 2000 - 2002 he was Digital Library Scientist and consultant at the Technical Knowledge Center & Library of Denmark. As a visiting scholar he spent a year at OCLC Office of Research in Dublin, Ohio, USA and some time at the Maastricht McLuhan Institute. He worked twice as a consultant for the FAO.
Traugott has worked in European Union, Nordic and national digital library projects, i.e. the EU projects DESIRE I and II, EULER and Renardus, a TEMPUS project in Lithuania, the Networks of Excellence DELOS and E-Culture Net, the Nordic Metadata Project, EELS (the Engineering Electronic Library Sweden) and the project "Intelligent components in a distributed Digital Library".
His main areas of interest are knowledge organization, classification and indexing; semantic interoperability; automatic classification; semantic web; metadata; quality controlled subject gateways on the Internet; information discovery and retrieval; digital library development and e-Science.
He has published more than 60 scholarly papers, edited one book and four journal special issues and has presented a large number of lectures, papers, courses and workshops.
Traugott serves on many programme committees for conferences, reviews papers and chairs sessions (e.g. at the International Digital Library conferences JCDL: ACM+IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries, ECDL, ICADL, ASIS&T; the Dublin Core, CoLIS, CRIS and Online conferences; NKOS and Delos workshops). 2003 he was the Program Chair of ECDL, the Seventh European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries, in Trondheim, Norway.
Traugott is Theme Editor Information Discovery of the electronic peer reviewed journal "Journal of Digital Information" (JoDI) and a member of several other editorial (International Journal on Digital Libraries IJDL; The New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia; Ariadne) and project boards.
He was involved in the development and maintenance of Dublin Core Metadata Initiative DCMI standards since 1996 and was a member of the DCMI Usage Board until 2005. He is still on the DCMI Advisory Board.
He is member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Social Sciences Information Centre-GESIS, IZ Bonn, Germany.
As an expert Traugott was invited to preparatory workshops for the 6. Framework Program covering the areas of Digital libraries and Semantic web, to an NSF-JISC Digital Library Futures workshop, JISC MODELS Terminology workshops, an JISC-SURF e-Thesis workshop and many other organisations and events. He served as expert evaluator for several national bodies.
Traugott is a member of the Networked Knowledge Organization Systems/Services (NKOS) network since the beginning 1997 and served as organiser, chair and presenter at NKOS workshops and events both in the USA (since 1997) and Europe (since 2000). He was editor of two NKOS special issues in JoDI 2001 and 2004.
