- Facing The Challenges Of A Standards-Based Approach To Web Development
- Abstract
- Web development work within the library sector usually seeks to make use of
open standards in order to ensure application- and device-independence,
widespread accessibility and interoperability. In practice, however, open standards
may be difficult or expensive to deploy. Indeed open standards may even fail to
gain widespread market acceptance. Rather than abandoning a commitment to open
standards in this talk Brian Kelly will argue the need to adopt an open standards
culture, which acknowledges the benefits of open standards, yet provides sufficient
flexibility to recognise times when proprietary solutions may be appropriate
or open standards too immature to be widely adopted. An approach which can help in
the selection of standards will be described, together with a description of a
framework for use of open standards.
- Date And Time
- The talk was part of the "Using Open Standards and Open Source Software" session
which was held on 11th October 2005 from 13:45-14:45.
The talk lasted for 30 minutes from 13:45-14:15.

- A Holistic Approach To Web Usability, Accessibility And Interoperability
- Abstract
- There can dangers that simplistic approaches to accessible Web design will
fail to take into account wider usability issues, and vice versa. Similarly there
can be dangers that addressing accessibility and usability issues can fail to
technical interoperability factors.
This workshop aims to provide a holistic approach to Web usability, accessibility
and interoperability issues. By the end of the workshop delegates will have gained
a understanding of usability, accessibility and interoperability issues and of
methodologies for developing accessible, usable and interoperable Web sites,
even for those on limited budgets. Specific areas which will be addressed
include WAI accessibility guidelines - their strengths and weaknesses; usability
testing include use of multiple browsers and configurations, structured usability testing;
and interoperability issues such as use of standards. A quality assurance framework
will be described which can help to ensure that best practices are correctly implemented.
The workshop will consist of presentations and group discussions.
Delegates will receive a workshop pack containing the workshop materials.
The workshop facilitators, Brian Kelly from UKOLN and Lawrie Phipps from TechDis,
are experienced presenters and have run many workshops on Web design, accessibility
and interoperability issues throughout the UK, Europe and further afield.
