Brian Kelly gave a talk on Addressing The Challenges Of New Devices And New Web Technologies at a meeting of SWITC held in Exmouth on 4th November 2004.
We can expect increasing numbers of students arriving at our institutions to possess a variety of gadgets such as mobile phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, PDAs, etc. In addition many will also be familiar with networked technologies such as instant messaging and various Web applications. And they will expect to be able to use these technologies when they arrive on campus.
As well as the expectations of our students, the Web community is developing a variety of new applications which may be of interest to the teaching and learning community, such as Blogs and Wikis.
It this talk Brian Kelly will review these emerging technologies and suggest strategies for IT Services who may be responsible for providing and supporting such technologies.
Brian Kelly is UK Web Focus - an advisory post responsible for providing advice and support related to use of the Web. Brian is funded by JISC and MLA to support the Higher and Further Education communities and the cultural heritage sector.
Brian was an early adopter and advocate of Web technologies, having helped established a Web services at the University of leeds in January 1993. He has spoken widely about the Web both within the UK and at several international conferences.
Brian is based at UKOLN, a national centre of expertise in digital information management located at the University of Bath.
