Brian Kelly facilitated two 75 minute sessions on Exploiting the Social Web to Promote Your Resources and Promotional Strategies For Your Service at a 2-day workshop on 'Maximising the Effectiveness of Your Online Resources' which were held at Brettenham House, London on 17-18th June 2010.
This 75-minute modules were delivered as part of a 2-day workshop which has been commissioned by the SCA (Strategic Content Alliance). The workshop is being organised by Netskills together with Brian Kelly, UKOLN. The modules consisted of a talk followed by group exercises.
This workshop session on Exploiting the Social Web to Promote Your Resources took place from 15:45-17:00 on Thursday 17th June 2010. The session on Promotional Strategies took place from 11:15-12:30 on Friday 3th June 2010.
Abstract 1: Exploiting the Social Web to Promote Your Resources
You understand best practices for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). But how can the Social Web be used to maximise access to your resources, your organisation, your project work or your staff?
This session will provide a variety of examples of the ways in which Social Web services, such as blogs, wikis, microblogs and social sharing services can be used to promote your resources and services.
The session will conclude by providing an opportunity for participants to address issues and possible concerns.
Abstract 2: Promotional Strategies for Your Service
You understand best practices for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). You are aware of how various Social Web services can be used to maximise access to your resources. What next?
This discussion group session will explore promotional strategies for enhancing access to your resources, your services and your ideas. The session will provide a number of scenarios and explore appropriate strategies for these scenarios.
The strategies will address the underlying objectives you are seeking to address, the tools which can be achieve those objectives, ways in which you can identify if the objectives are being met, metrics for providing evidence and, possibly, for reporting to management and funders, the people who will be responsible for implementing the strategies and the ethical issues associated with use of tools, including social networking services, to support organisational aims.

Biographical Details
Brian Kelly has been involved in Web development since January 1993, when he helped to established a Web site at the University of Leeds (one of the first institutional Web sites in the UK). Since 1996 Brian has been employed at UKOLN, a national centre of expertise in digital information management based at the University of Bath in the UK. His responsibility is to advise the UK's higher and further community and the cultural heritage sector on ways of maximising the potential of the Web.
