Current Approaches To Automated News Feeds

Aims Of This Exercise

This exercise is intended for use in a hands-on session.  The aim of the exercise is to gain familiarisation of existing suppliers of news feeds.

2.1       Guardian

In your Web browser go to the URL <http://www.guardian.co.uk/> and follow the link to Free Content on Your Site (which is at the URL <http://www.guardian.co.uk/distribution/>). 

Follow the links to the Services and select a news feed, such as Education News.  Preview the news feed.

Scroll to the bottom of the list of services and click on the Submit button.

Read the terms and conditions and then click on Accept.  Notice that you are given the address of the news feed.

Click on the Technical Help link and read about how to include the news on your own site.

2.2       Moreover

In your Web browser go to the URL <http://w.moreover.com/> and follow the link to Free News Applications For Webmasters. 

Launch the News Feed Wizard.

Choose a channel such as Internet and a Category such as Webmaster Tips.

Select the option to change the layout.  Make some changes and then select the Preview option.

Click on the option to Get Code.  Send yourself the code via email.

2.3       EEVL News Feeds

Go to the URL <http://www.eevl.ac.uk/current_awareness_services.html> and notice how the EEVL gateway provides current awareness services for its users.
