Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT)

The Getty Vocabulary Program builds, maintains and disseminates vocabulary tools for the visual arts and architecture. The vocabularies produced by the Getty are the Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT), the Union List of Artists Names (ULAN) and the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN).

The AAT is a structured vocabulary of more than 125,000 terms, scope notes and other information describing fine art, architecture, decorative arts and archival and cultural materials.

The ULAN is a structured vocabulary containing more than 220,000 names and biographical and bibliographical information about artists and architects, including a wealth of variant names, pseudonyms and language variants.

The TGN is a structured vocabulary of more than 1,000,000 geographic names, including vernacular and historical names, coordinates and place types, focusing on names important to the study of art and architecture.

The Getty vocabularies are available on the Web free of charge. Read the 'How to Obtain Vocabularies' section to learn about licenses to use the terms.
