Summary

The early advocacy work which described the potential benefits which can be gained from Web 2.0 services and the Social Web environment are now becoming widely accepted. The mainstream sector is now embracing the approaches which have been taken by the early adopters in order to engage with new audiences, provide much richer services and exploit an infrastructure which can be used without the need for significant levels of resources or in-house expertise.

But what of the dangers? And in light of the current economic difficulties we are facing, is it sensible to be engaging in what could be risky approaches?

In this talk Brian Kelly will argue that avoiding risks is not an option. And we need to remember that a failure to take risks can also mean a failure to exploit opportunities.

Brian will describe a "risks and opportunities framework" which was presented at the recent Museums and the Web 2009 conference. This framework is based on a culture of openness in which risks are openly acknowledged and discussed and approaches to risk management are shared.
