BackgroundWhy an advisory service? If the digital resources developed by nof-digitise are to be accessible to as many people as possible, available for as long as possible and deliver the greatest value for money then it is important that the technical development of these projects is rigorous and based on good practice. If a project is to be successfully implemented then the development of its technical framework should be integral at all stages. Technical decisions made at all stages will impact on the quality of the resources developed by the project, its costings and even its viability. The development of the nof-digitise standards (which every project must adhere to) has gone someway to helping projects make the right technical decisions during their planning stages. However, for many organisations developing and implementing their projects will still involve a steep learning curve. nof-digitise may be the first time that many applicants have put together a digitisation project proposal. In-house skills and experience of digitisation projects may still be developing. NOF, therefore, recognised that some organisations may benefit from technical help when developing and implementing their projects. The technical advisory service is now run by UKOLN, in association with the AHDS. It will provide support mainly via e-mail and its Web site. The technical advisory service will be freely available for all nof-digitise Programme participants to use.
