SUMMARY OF SOFTWARE SURVEY TOTALS - 15th October 2003

The following tables present the total number of software packages used by projects. This information is gathered from the Technical Specification reports. Although the totals presented here accurately reflect the data that is contained in these forms, no guarantee can be made that the data accurately reflects the software usage of projects.

It is clear that in some cases the questions on the Technical Specification are ambiguous, hence a survey meant to detail software usage contains details of imaging hardware.

The results in the table above show how this question has been misunderstood by some projects. Seven projects state that they are using SQL as their Content Management System without specifying the type of database.

However, the most popular type of database being used by projects is Microsoft Access (31 projects). Although Access is an acceptable choice for smaller and simpler projects, its use on larger projects needs to be considered carefully.

Again, these results show that this question has been misunderstood by some projects and incorrect answers are being given. Examples of this would be the references to the Oracle database and MySQL.

However, of the packages referenced in the forms Microsoft IIS is the most popular and is used by 17 projects. The next popular is Windows 2000 Server (10 projects).
