Introduction
'Themes' are an important concept across the Digital Repositories Programme, having a role in internal and external Synthesis, allowing us to gather together much of what is going on across projects, within the support team and further afield, in one easy to navigate place. Projects have already been clustered around particular overarching themes and from discussions within these Clusters, further key themes are surfacing. As the Programme continues, these thematic areas will act as a snapshot of cross-Programme activity and as the Programme draws to its close next year these themes will are offer a step towards a final synthesis. Themes also have other functions, acting as informational resources on particular topics (e.g. Identifiers), allowing us to identify connections across different areas, e.g. between elements of the Typology and different Stakeholders and communities and enabling us to see where reference models might be used across the repositories landscape.
This thematic analysis is based loosely on the OAIS model, using the concepts of functions, information, consumer/producer, management and the Designated Community therein. Additional reference has been made to the Repositories Review [1], the e-Framework [2] and individual project visits and documentation.
The themes are structured around 3 over-arching contexts: Human for the non-technical activities; Machine for the technical; and the External context where technical and service frameworks provide external infrastructure and references.
