MADS
Metadata Authority Description
Schema. An XML schema for an authority element set that may be used
to provide metadata about agents (people, organisations), events, and
terms (topics, geographics, genres, etc). Developed by the Library of
Congress and the MARC Standards Office to serve as a companion to the
Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS).
MARC
Machine-Readable Cataloguing format. Developed in 1965-66 by the Library of Congress.
MeSH
Medical Subject Headings. Controlled vocabulary developed by the National Library of Medicine (NLM).
MEG
Museum Ethnographers
Group. Formed in 1976, aims to encourage good practice in curatorship
of all ethnographic collections in the UK.
METS
Metadata Encoding and Transmission
Standard. An XML-based standard for encoding descriptive, administrative
and structural metadata regarding objects in a digital library. Developed
by the Library of Congress and the MARC Standards Office. METS profiles
describe classes of METS documents: musical score, printed material, music
manuscript, recorded event (audio or video), PDF document, bibliographic
record, photograph, compact disc, collection.
MIDAS
MIDAS is a content standard for historic environment information maintained
by FISH. It sets out a list of the items or 'units' of information that
should be included in an inventory or other systematic record of the historic
environment. These units of information are grouped together under broad
headings or 'information schemes', which cover areas such as Monument
Character, Events, People and Organisation, etc. Standards for indexing
under each unit of information are contained in the INSCRIPTION standard.
MODS
Metadata Object Description
Standard. An XML-based bibliographic element set that may be used
for a variety of purposes, particularly for library applications, developed
by the Library of Congress and the MARC Standards Office. It is intended
to be able to carry selected data from existing MARC 21 records as well
as to enable the creation of original resource description records. It
includes a subset of MARC fields and uses language-based tags rather than
numeric ones. The current version (March 2007) is MODS version 3.2.
