UKOLN Open Forum: Session On 'Digital Curation as a Framework for Managing and Preserving Email Records'

Title
Digital Curation as a Framework for Managing and Preserving Email Records
Speaker
Maureen Pennock, UKOLN
Abstract
Proper curation of digital materials requires active management over the entire life cycle, from creation through to archiving, preservation, and re-use. It enables future users to have confidence that the data they access is reliable and authentic, and benefits all types of digital materials, from large datasets and complex data models to office documents and email messages. Each type of material brings its own characteristics and requirements, and email is no exception.
Email is both a solution and a challenge in the modern working environment. The increasing use of e-mail has drastically changed the way that many organisations work, yet existing infrastructures are often inadequate for the proper management and long-term preservation of valuable email records. Based on research undertaken by UKOLN for the UK Digital Curation Centre (DCC), this session will provide a brief introduction to the DCC, to digital curation and to the roles and responsibilities required for the effective curation of email records.
Learning objectives:
At the end of this session, participants will:
  • have learned about the structure, aims and objectives of the UK Digital Curation Centre.
  • have developed an understanding of digital curation issues, specifically as they relate to email.
  • have a sound understanding of a framework for proper curation of email records.
