Purpose of Workshop
Over the last year eBank UK project has investigated the 'publication at source' of research data in a specific scientific area, crystallography. Based on the open access model, the project has produced a prototype repository of crystallography data which enables self-archiving of data by chemists. A demonstrator service has been developed in conjunction with the ePrints UK project which allows users to search available data repositories and make links to the published literature. The project has also investigated methods for embedding such services within external points of access, such as subject portals.
eBank UK is holding a workshop to obtain feedback from stakeholder communities on the outputs of the project. This workshop provides an opportunity to shape future strategies and requirements.
The aims of this workshop are to demonstrate the outcomes of the eBank UK project to potential adopters and collaborators, and to engage key players involved in the publishing and access to scientific data in order to evaluate the progress made, discuss the issues and consider their future requirements. The eBank UK project will use feedback from the workshop to make recommendations to the JISC as part of the final report from the project. .
During the workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn about the outputs of eBank UK through demonstrations of the repository of crystallography reports, and the search service, and their integration into PSIgate.
Although the workshop will concentrate on the crystallography area as an exemplar, other disciplines are invited to investigate the possibilities for the extension of the approach into their own scientific community. The workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss the scope and potential for other similar services to be developed, their relation to existing data facilities, business models and potential collaborations, as well as the use of such data archives in learning and research activites.
Participants are invited to contribute to the discussion by placing the eBank UK project in the context of their own activities, describing their requirements and suggesting ways forward that will be of mutual benefit to their communities (publishers, learned societies, and the HE and FE community).
Target Audience
The workshop is by invitation only and aims to bring together a number of stakeholders in the production, publication and re-use of scientific data, including:
- Owners of data who would like to create repositories
- Learned societies representing the producers of data
- Service providers that publish data and related services (such as visualization utilities)
- Journal editors interested in linking to data made available through open access
- Members of the Open Archives community interested in issues of data repositories
- Representatives of the educational users who may wish to re-use scientific data in research and learning
- Directors or managers with responsibilites for the design and delivery of the infrastructure within which data repositories will function and interoperate in the UK HE and FE sectors
Costs
There is no charge for attending the workshop; a light lunch will be served. eBank UK regrets it is unable to assist with travelling expenses.
